{"id":149,"date":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.libertymanagement.us\/fda-support\/?p=149"},"modified":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T18:19:15","slug":"who-regulates-cosmetics-for-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.libertymanagement.us\/fda-support\/2019\/07\/17\/who-regulates-cosmetics-for-animals\/","title":{"rendered":"Who regulates cosmetics for animals?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Federal law defines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdahelp.us\/cosmetics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"cosmetics  (opens in a new tab)\">cosmetics <\/a>as articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body or any part thereof for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance, and articles intended for use as a component of any such articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Act specifically addresses cosmetics used on human body.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what about the cosmetics used on animals?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cosmetics used on animals are commonly referred to as grooming aids. Animal soaps, shampoos and other products that are intended for cleansing or promoting attractiveness of animals are not regulated by FDA. So, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdahelp.us\/fda-cosmetic-registration.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"FDA requirements (opens in a new tab)\">FDA requirements<\/a> that apply to human cosmetics do not apply to animal grooming aids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if such products are intended for any therapeutic purpose or if they are intended to affect the structure or function of the animal, they are subject to FDA regulations as new animal drugs.
